In the year 2050, there will be 9.1 billion people on planet earth. To sustain this growth, we must increase global agricultural production by 70%, and by 100% in developing countries.
Concurrently, we face massive challenges. Climate change threatens crop yield each year through erratic weather events. Herbicides and pesticides have poisoned our soil and waterways. Runoff from nitrogen-laden fertilizer has created dead zones in our coastal waters so severe that the United States, a nation surrounded by oceans, must import 80% of its seafood. We receive our food through a distribution system where the average distance your dinner travels to reach your dinner plate is 1,500 miles, and fossil fuel prices are only expected to rise.
We must produce more food to feed an increasingly affluent and growing world population that will demand a more diverse diet, contribute to overall development and poverty alleviation in many developing countries, confront increased competition for alternative uses of finite land and water resources, adapt to climate change, and contribute to preserving biodiversity and restoring fragile ecosystems. Using advances in technology, new and innovative designs, and cross-sector collaboration, we help feed the world.
