Instream-flows and the management of aquatic ecosystems

Go to for a closer look at the area.
Diverting stream water and building dams can change the amount
and frequency of stream flow, water quality, and the abundance and
diversity of aquatic resources. Determining how much stream water
can be removed from a system while sustaining these resources has
been a major water management issue for decades. This is especially
true in the humid tropics where water diversions are increasing
at unprecedented rates. This research focus integrates hydrology,
geomorphology, and ecology to develop the scientific basis for managing
aquatic resources in order to meet the needs of users while minimizing
both operating costs and adverse environmental effects. Recent publications
