Institute for Environmental Studies

Academic Programs; A University-Wide Environmental Education

Individuals seeking to incorporate environmental issues into their curriculum can take advantage of Penn's multidisciplinary educational opportunities. Penn has environmental courses in numerous departments and several schools. This is a comprehensive list of such courses based on the 2001-2002 University Course Register*. The list is intended as a resource for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and other interested parties. In addition to approximately 80 courses focused primarily on the environment, there are a wide variety of courses across the university that address environmental issues from other fields of study.

See the detailed course list with descriptions from the Course Register and IES keywords for each course. These courses are arranged by department.

Keywords designated by IES for each course note the relation to IES' two priority areas and categorize the courses into broad interest areas. Course names and numbers for each keyword category are listed below.

Estimate of environmental focus of course material:
Environmental Focus: course deals primarily with environmental issues
Environmental Issues Incorporated: course deals primarily with another subject, with environmental issues as a component throughout or in a small amount, or the course concerns topics directly relevant to current environmental concerns

Broad categories:
Science and Health: mainly courses in Biology, Environmental Studies, and Geology, and also some in Anthropology, Chemistry, Engineering, and Nursing.
Management, Planning, and Policy: mainly courses in Business and Public Policy, City and Regional Planning, Environmental Studies, Landscape Architecture, and Legal Studies, and also some in Biology, Economics, Insurance and Risk Management, Operations and Information Management, Political Science, and Systems Engineering.
Business and Economics: mainly courses in Business and Public Policy, Economics, Legal Studies, and Operations and Information Management, and also some in Anthropology, Insurance and Risk Management, and Real Estate
Engineering, Design, and Systems: mainly courses in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Systems Engineering, and also some in Art History and Chemical Engineering.
History, Humanities, and Social Sciences: mainly courses in Anthropology, Environmental Studies, History and Sociology of Science, Landscape Architecture, and Political Science, and also some in African Studies, African-American Studies, Comparative Literature, History, Philosophy, Psychology, and Religion.

*Because this list is based on the 2001-2002 University Course Register, it does not include information about semester availability. To find out if a course is taught during the current semester, see the Course Timetable. Additional information can sometimes be found by looking at past timetables on the Registrar's site, and at departmental website course lists. Also, although this environmental course list attempts to be a useful compilation for the Penn community, it is not a definitive list of every environmental opportunity on campus.
