How do I get to campus?
How much money should I bring with me?
Most students report exchanging money in their home country so that they enter the US with $100-$200 in local currency. Most students open US bank accounts during the ELP orientation. However, it can take a few days for money from a student's home country to be transferred and accessible in their new bank accounts. Therefore, many students will use debit cards from their home country until the money in their US bank account is available.
If you have not done so prior to arrival, you should be prepared to pay your bill for your ELP classes and housing no later than the Friday of orientation week. Most students arriving with payments will bring their payment in the form of an international money order or check drafted on a US bank. The ELP cannot accept credit cards.
How much does airport transportation (to/from airport) cost?
A taxi to/from the airport costs $28.50. Less expensive options such as train and shuttle are also available. The ELP does not offer airport transfer service.
ELP does not provide private airport pickup; however, students may contact a private airport pickup service.
Please note that it is not difficult to travel between the airport and the campus, so there is no need to worry. We have dozens of students who come to America for the first time every session and they never report problems traveling to campus.
You will receive a welcome packet with your I-20 that contains detailed information about traveling from the airport to campus. This includes a number of different travel options such as taxis, buses, trains, and a shuttle service called Lady Liberty through which you can make a reservation before your departure from your country.
When should I arrive?
We recommend that you arrive the day before your program starts. If you will arrive sooner, check with your housing provider to make sure your room will be available for the extra nights. If you cannot arrive on the first day, please contact the ELP to tell us when you will arrive.
Where will I go when I arrive?
You should first go to your housing provider to check into your room. Make sure you have the address for where you will live so you can provide it to the taxi or shuttle driver. You should report to the ELP on the first day of your program. The address is:
110 Fisher-Bennett Hall
3340 Walnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19104

Do I need to bring my passport-sized photo to make a student ID?
A passport-sized photo should be sent prior to arriving on campus in order to make this process go quickly and smoothly. If photos are sent prior to arrival, the Penn ID card will be ready when you arrive. Otherwise, you will have to go to the ID center to have your photograph taken and your ID made.
