Coordinator, Distributed Learning
Karen Asenavage, Coordinator of Distributed Learning, joined the ELP in June 2006. Ms. Asenavage develops and teaches on-line and related distributed learning courses as well as in special programs such as the U.S Department of State Summer Institute for English Language Educators from South Africa.
Ms. Asenavage received her BA in Biology and Chemistry from Messiah College in 1980, and then moved to the Midwest where she developed and ran several entrepreneurial ventures. In 1992, she completed her MA in TESOL from Ball State University, her secondary teaching certificate in Biology and Chemistry, and all-grade ESL while teaching in the Intensive English Program. From there, she moved to take up a position at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis Intensive English Program where, in addition to teaching, she was involved with placement, assessment and graduate assistant programs. She also taught in a local high school and other intensive English programs.
Ms. Asenavage has come most recently from the United Arab Emirates where she was an instructor and then a Coordinator for English for Specific Purposes at the United Arab Emirates University from 1994-2000. In 2000, she began working at the Higher Colleges of Technology where she was a Supervisor of several programs. These programs included Health Sciences, B. Ed in English for Young Learners, General Business and IT, Applied Business Diploma and a program for mature women reentering the workforce, the Work Readiness Program. In supervising these programs she developed curriculum integrated with appropriate technologies and worked closely with local ministries of health and education, schools, hospitals and businesses.
Ms. Asenavage has been extremely active through leadership and presentations with TESOL Arabia and with TESOL since 1994. Her areas of interest are in curriculum development, educational technology and leadership development.
