Language Specialist
Kathleen Ryan, joined the ELP as a lecturer in 2007 and became a Language Specialist in 2008, but her career as an ESL instructor began in Thailand. She taught thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds at St. Gabriel's College in Bangkok, a private grade school for boys. After returning to the US, Ms. Ryan earned her MA in TESOL from American University in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a program assistant to facilitate several professional development conferences on topics such as literacy development and cultural issues in the EFL setting. As a graduate student, she taught at private English language schools in D.C. and as a TOEFL preparation tutor for high school and graduate-level students.
In addition to teaching, Ms. Ryan is active in Penn TESOL-East, serving as the Higher Education Interest Section chair. Her past positions include conference committee member and acting secretary. She is also certified to rate SPEAK and Interactive Performance Tests at the University of Pennsylvania.
Ms. Ryan holds a BA in Communications with a specialization in Journalism from Loyola College in Maryland. Like many of her colleagues in the English Language Programs, she enjoys international travel, and during her undergraduate program, she spent a semester studying journalism and music in London. She has professional experience as an editor, researcher, and freelance graphic designer.
