Sheila Mayne joined the staff of the English Language Programs as a Language Specialist in January 2002. She has been teaching in the English as a Second/Foreign Language field for over 25 years, and has expertise as an English language, literature, and writing instructor. During her time at ELP, she has coordinated a variety of ELP programs including the Conversation and Culture Program, Fulbright Pre-Academic Program, the Summer Institute for English Language Educators from South Africa (SIELE), and the Institute for Academic Studies.
Ms. Mayne received her MA in TESOL/linguistics with an emphasis on writing from San Jose State University in California. She also trained as a writing consultant in the National Writing Project and has presented at numerous national and state conferences for English teachers on writing and literature in the classroom. She has taught in universities in South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and Mexico, and has presented and given workshops for ESL/EFL educators in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Spain, the UAE, and Hong Kong. She has published in the Mexican TESOL Journal, the NY TESOL Journal "Idiom," and contributed to the Penn TESOL East professional news journal. Ms. Mayne's professional areas of interest include writing, reading, and grammar.
In addition to her pedagogical interest in writing, Ms. Mayne has tried her hand at freelance writing on such topics as food and travel. Ms. Mayne also volunteers in the West Philadelphia neighborhood as part of the University City Green, planting trees and "greening" urban spaces.
