Students in ELP programs have access to many services through the ELP and the University of Pennsylvania. Some activities require an additional fee.
ELP staff and faculty are always available to help students with questions about living and studying in the USA. Students in some programs receive a Penn e-mail account; students in all programs can access the Internet for free through computers in the ELP Student Center or at the many computer labs on campus. In the ELP Student Center students can relax, read magazines and newspapers, drink coffee or tea, and practice their English with other students and staff.
ELP students in most programs receive an identification card (the Penn Card [1]) that permits them to use Penn's academic and recreational facilities or services such as: 15 libraries, Penn museums, computer labs with Internet access, digital language laboratory, campus bus service and walking escort service, tennis courts, gymnasiums with exercise and weight-lifting rooms, indoor courts for squash, racquetball, basketball, and volleyball, indoor swimming pools, saunas and steam rooms, and an ice skating rink. (Use of some recreational facilities require a fee.)
Many programs include a sociocultural component in which students take fieldtrips and excursions to local and regional sites of interest, especially ones where the participants will have opportunities to interact with Americans and to learn about US history and culture. Click here [2] to see a list of sample sociocultural field trips.
In January and in September, students can participate in a free program that matches them with students at Penn who are studying foreign languages. The two matched students meet once or twice a week. They spend half the time together speaking in English, and half of the time speaking in the first language of the Intensive Program student. In many cases, long-lasting friendships have developed as a result of the Conversation Partners program. Click here [3] to sign-up.
Visit our facebook page [4] to see photos of classes and activities. Or go to our "Meet Our Students" [5] page to learn about typical ELP students.
Intensive and Super-Intensive Program students have additional services available to them. Please visit our IP student services page [6] to read more about these services.
