The Quantitative Data Analysis:
Information for faculty

Courses meeting the requirement
Criteria for courses
Questionnaire for course approval
Request for proposals for funding
At the February 4, 1997 meeting, the School of Arts and Sciences faculty approved a proposal to improve the quantitative skills of undergraduates in the College. The first part of this policy encourages departments and faculty "to expand the discussion and analysis of quantitative evidence in their courses". To support faculty in this goal, we have compiled a summary of available resourses, including possible funding to support relevant course development activities.

The second part of the newly adopted policy establishes "a requirement that students complete at least one course which uses mathematical or statistical analysis of quantitative data as an important approach for understanding another area of knowledge". This requirement became effective for students who entered the College in the Fall Semester, 1998. We have approved several courses as satisfying this Quantitative Skills Requirement, according to a set of criteria.

We are eager to identify additional courses which would satisfy the Quantitative Skills Requirement, particularly courses which are introductory and/or offered by departments which are not already represented. We are interested in courses which are suitable as currently taught, courses which faculty propose to modify, or new courses which a faculty member and his or her department propose to offer. If you teach or plan to teach a course which you think may be suitable, please complete our questionnaire and return it to us, together with a syllabus and relevant assignments and/or exams. If you would like to discuss a previously submitted course or any other potentially relevant course, please contact D. Kent Peterman (peterman@sas.upenn.edu).
