In the decades before the advent of modern gay and lesbian politics, images could perhaps speak louder than words about homoerotic desire and homosexual practice. Why is that so? And how do we deal in our teaching and our research with "queer" imagery without imposing a post-Stonewall frame or rejecting such desires outright by claiming that LGBT liberation did not yet "exist" in its more modern sense? Discussing some concrete examples of both male and female relationships as depicted in painting and popular culture (from ca. 1870-1920), we will attempt to establish some useful critical categories for the classroom and our own writing.
