Faculty Works-in-Progress Seminar with Tamara Walker (History / Africana Studies)

Date:
Friday, November 14, 2014 - 12:00pm - 1:30pm

Please join us in Cohen 436 for a faculty works-in-progress seminar featuring Tamara Walker (History /Africana Studies)

Tamara will be sharing her work "Queen of the Congos: Slavery, Gender, and Religious Practice in Late-Colonial Lima, Peru," which focuses on an episode from the nineteenth century, when an enslaved woman in Lima found her role as queen of an African-descent confraternity rescinded on the basis of her legal status. Tamara follows her pursuit of redress through the courts, while also examining the ways in which confraternity membership and their attendant religious practices provided enslaved men and women with viable forms of political participation in Lima.

Respondents:

Marie Elise Escalante (Hispanic Studies) and Anthea Butler (Religious Studies and Africana Studies)

Lunch will be served. Please RSVP below to reserve your lunch and to receive a pre-circulated paper.
