Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Steven F. Goldstone
Endowed Term Professor of Political Science
As
associate dean for graduate studies, Dr. Nagel oversees the
School’s doctoral programs, which take place in 34
graduate groups and enroll a total of 2,000 students. He
is also responsible for the School’s master’s
programs in governmental administration and organizational
dynamics, as well as its area studies centers and a variety
of other research centers.
Profesor Nagel, who has been at Penn since 1971, is the Steven F. Goldstone Endowed Term Professor of Political Science. His research and teaching focus on democratic theory, electoral systems, social choice, and political participation. He holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. from Yale University. During his tenure as department chair from 2000 to 2003, he led a highly successful effort to build the political science faculty and programs. He has also chaired the graduate groups in political science and public policy analysis and has directed the Washington Semester Program.
