About SAS
SAS is at the foundation of the scholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of the world's leading research universities. Ten of its 26 departments are ranked in the top ten nationally for faculty distinction according to the National Research Council, and SAS faculty are regularly recognized with academia's highest honors, including in recent years the National Medal of Science, the MacArthur Fellowship, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Nobel Prize.
The educational experience offered by SAS is likewise recognized for its excellence. Students learn from faculty who are leaders in creating new knowledge in their disciplines. SAS is the academic home of the majority of Penn students and provides 60 percent of the courses taken by students in Penn's undergraduate professional schools. Half of the students of SAS are enrolled in one of its 34 graduate programs, eight of which were ranked in the top ten in the most recent survey by the National Research Council.
The School's offerings are diverse and include a range of innovative programs including the Biological Basis of Behavior; Philosophy, Politics, and Economics; and the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business, to name only a few. Other highlights of the SAS experience include over 50 different languages; a strong Jewish Studies Program with links to the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies, the only post-doctoral institute in Jewish studies in the country; programs in Cognitive Science and Cognitive Neuroscience; and over 100 courses focused on academically based community service.
