A Life Sciences Hub
The building's location on the south side of the campus, within walking distance
of the research buildings of the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Medicine, Nursing,
and Veterinary Medicine, will transform the area into a hub for the life sciences.
Phase I of the project will yield 107,515 square feet behind the Leidy, Kaplan,
and Mudd buildings, currently home to much of Penn's life sciences research.
In Phase II, the occupants of Kaplan and Mudd will move into the new facility.
These two outmoded buildings will be demolished, and an additional 109,550
square feet will be constructed in their place, connecting the Leidy Laboratories
with the Phase I building as shown in the diagram.
Garden View
Seminar rooms, conference rooms, and faculty offices will overlook the beautifully
renovated James G. Kaskey Memorial Park, a botanical garden utilized by biology
faculty and students and enjoyed by the campus community and visitors. The
complex has been sensitively designed to accommodate the needs of this urban
oasis, preserving as much as possible its plant and wildlife, as well as
its access to much-needed sunlight.
View Along University Avenue
Greenhouses for plant science research will be incorporated into the Phase
I building, which has been designed to allow room for additional plantings
along its western façade. An underground loading dock beneath the
greenhouses will keep vehicular disturbances at a minimum, further preserving
the beauty and tranquility of this portion of the campus.
First Floor Plan, Phase I
The facility will contain wet laboratories for biology and genomics research;
animal, plant, and fish facilities; two greenhouses; and plant growth chambers.
These spaces will be built for easy reconfiguration as research evolves,
thus satisfying the needs of today's scientists while simultaneously anticipating
the needs of tomorrow's.
