The Foundation for Excellence: Faculty
Our Goal: $195 Million
The faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences forms the foundation for accomplishment in all of the School’s endeavors. These top scholars are experts and innovators in their fields. They are also devoted teachers who are dedicated to providing the best education to undergraduate and graduate students. A critical tool in the effort to recruit and retain such exceptional faculty is the establishment of endowed chairs, which, in addition to conferring academic prestige, carry an annual research fund. For these reasons, establishing endowed professorships is one of the School’s top priorities.
Opening Doors to Opportunity: Financial Aid
Our Goal: $170 Million
By providing a path for the best minds to access the best possible education, regardless of social and economic background, scholarships and fellowships at Penn reach beyond individual students to benefit our diverse society. Penn’s policy of need-blind admissions guarantees that every undergraduate applicant is evaluated solely on the basis of merit and that admitted students receive as much aid as they need. The scope of this commitment, while great, is critical to the future of need-blind admissions and to guaranteeing our ability to sustain a talented, diverse student body.
The Future of Undergraduate Education: Funding Innovation at the College
Our Goal: $50 Million
The College of Arts and Sciences embraces the responsibility of providing an education that matches the talents of its outstanding students, as reflected in our long history of innovation. SAS strives to be responsive to the needs of students in a new century in many ways — from pioneering new paths to integrating theory and practice to developing interdisciplinary programs to preparing students for their professional careers. The School is seeking to raise support that will allow us to strengthen existing programs and develop new ones that will enrich education at Penn and serve as models for other universities and colleges.
Building the Home for Accomplishment: Facilities Projects
Our Goal: $85 Million
Buildings — the physical spaces that house discovery, learning and academic interaction — are critical to the School’s mission. SAS has targeted three priority facilities needs. Two of these projects will help to advance our work along today’s most exciting lines of scientific discovery: a facility for nanoscale research and a neural and behavioral research facility. The third priority, the renovation of the Music Building, will address the most pressing facilities need impacting our students and faculty in the humanities.
