The 459-member standing faculty of the School of Arts and Sciences is a group of extraordinary vitality and productivityinternationally renowned scholars who make major contributions to their fields. SAS faculty across the disciplines received nearly $47 million in funding in FY2000 for research.
The contributions made by SAS faculty are reflected in part through the honors that they receive. Recent awards include Guggenheim, Sloan (earned by young faculty in the natural sciences), and MacArthur fellowships, as well as a Grammy for classical composition, National Medal of Science winners, and winners of the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes.
A large number of SAS faculty are also elected members of their respective learned societies. As of the close of the 2001-2002 academic year, the SAS faculty included 23 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 7 members of the Institute of Medicine, 31 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and 12 members of the American Philosophical Society.
