Haimanti Banerjee of Receives Grant
South Asia Center outreach coordinator and Bengali instructor Haimanti Banerjee has received a three-year, $126,000 International Research and Studies Instructional Materials grant. Haimanti’s project was one of only 13 selected for funding in a pool of 96 applicants, and one of only three awards for South Asia language-related projects. This award will enable the creation of 100 on-line Bengali learning modules to move learners from the intermediate-low level to the advanced-low level according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages proficiency scale. An important mandate of Title VI National Resource Centers is to encourage and support the creation of high quality language materials that will, in turn, facilitate the study of less commonly taught languages at the intermediate and advanced levels. Haimanti’s project will make an invaluable contribution toward the South Asia Center's achievement of this mandate.
The International Research and Studies Program is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s International Education Programs Service. The program supports surveys, studies and the development of instructional materials to improve and strengthen instruction in modern foreign languages, area studies and other international fields.
