African Studies Association President: Sandra Barnes

Sandra Barnes, professor of anthropology, has been elected president of the African Studies Association (ASA). She begins her three-year term in December 2002 as vice president, moves into the presidency in 2003, and serves as past president during 2004.

The African Studies Association was founded in 1957 to bring together people with a scholarly and professional interest in Africa. Today, the ASA produces four periodicals, serves a membership of 3,000 individual and institutional members, and has become the leading North American organization that promotes African Studies.
