Charles Bernstein Awarded by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
January 2008
Charles Bernstein, Donald T. Regan Professor of English, has been awarded an ASCAPLUS Award by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). These awards recognize and reward active writers in the early and mid stages of their careers, and established writers whose main activity is outside of broadcast media.
Bernstein is the author of 39 books, ranging from large-scale collections of poetry and essays to pamphlets, libretti, translations, and collaborations. His most recently published full-length works of poetry include Girly Man, With Strings, and Republics of Reality: 1975-1995. He has also published two books of essays and one essay/poem collection, and his libretto Shadowtime, for composer Brian Ferneyhough, was performed as part of the 2005 Lincoln Center Festival. Bernstein teaches poetry and poetics, and he co-directs PENNsound, an ongoing digital poetry project from Penn’s Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing.
In 2006, Bernstein was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, which counts more than 170 Nobel laureates and 50 Pulitzer Prize winners among its members. Berstein’s previous awards include the Roy Harvey Pearce/Archive for New Poetry Prize of the University of California, San Diego and the Dean's Award for Innovation in Teaching from Penn.
Created in 1914, ASCAP is a membership association of more than 300,000 U.S. composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. The organization supports the growth and development of music professionals through a variety of initiatives including awards, workshops, performance showcases and publications.
