November 30, 2004 After a nationwide search, President Amy Gutmann and Interim Provost Peter Conn have announced the selection of Rebecca Bushnell, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a distinguished scholar of English literature, as the next dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and the Thomas S. Gates, Jr. Professor. She will begin her new position January 1, succeeding Samuel H. Preston, the Frederick J. Warren Professor of Demography, whose seven-year term as dean concludes at the end of December. In making the announcement they stated, “We are delighted to have found the ideal candidate right here at Penn. Rebecca is an exemplary scholar and educator whose understanding of the critical role that a liberal arts education plays in our society makes her a compelling choice to lead Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences. She provided exceptional leadership during her tenure as dean of the College and…as associate dean for arts and letters in SAS.” |
