Three SAS Faculty Win 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship Awards
April 2009
A trio of professors in the School of Arts and Sciences have been awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships: Judith Rodin Professor of English David J. Wallace, in recognition of his scholarship on European literary history; Professor of Sociology Susan Cotts Watkins, in recognition of her work on navigating AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa; and Associate Professor of Music Anna Weesner, in recognition of her contributions to music composition.
Awarded to artists, scientists and scholars in a wide variety of fields, Guggenheim Fellowships are conferred on the basis of stellar achievement and exceptional promise for continued accomplishment. This year the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded 180 Fellowships in the United States and Canada from a pool of nearly 3,000 applicants. Awards are based on recommendations from hundreds of expert advisors and are approved by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
The Foundation was established by former U.S. Sen. and Mrs. Simon Guggenheim as a memorial to their son who died in 1922. Fellowships have been awarded annually since 1925.
