History professor Steven Hahn has received both the Bancroft Prize and the Merle Curti Prize for his new book, A Nation Under Our Feet: Black Political Struggles in the Rural South From Slavery to the Great Migration. The book explores the political sensibilities that developed under slavery and shows how they served as a foundation for later political action.
Hahn, who came to Penn in the fall from Northwestern University, is the Roy F. and Jeannette P. Nichols Professor of American History. He is a distinguished scholar of American history, with interests in Southern politics and the comparative history of slavery and emancipation. He holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester and an M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Yale University.
The Bancroft Prize is awarded annually by Columbia University for the best book on American history. The Organization of American Historians awards the Merle Curti Prize for the best book in social history each year.
