Political Science Department’s Julia Lynch Wins Award for Best Book on European Politics and Society
June, 2007
Julia Lynch, an assistant professor of political science, was recently selected to receive the American Political Science Association's (APSA) 2007 award for the best book published on European politics and society. Age in the Welfare State: The Origins of Social Spending on Pensioners, Workers and Children explores the causes and consequences of how nations vary in their allocation of social policy resources to different age groups.
The APSA is the leading professional organization for the study of political science, and it brings together an international roster of political scientists from all fields of inquiry. Lynch’s own research focuses on the comparative political economy of Western Europe, with an emphasis on social welfare policy.
Lynch has previously received awards from the National Science Foundation, Social Science Research Council and Penn's University Research Foundation. Earlier this year, she was awarded a major multi-year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study how European and U.S. societies differ in their beliefs about health inequities.
