School of Arts and Sciences Welcomes New Faculty
September 2005
The School of Arts and Sciences announces the addition of 20 new members to its standing faculty. “We are extremely pleased to welcome such a talented group of scholars and teachers – from around the world and in a wide range of disciplines – to the SAS community,” said Dean Rebecca W. Bushnell. “They will contribute greatly to the richness of academic life in the School.”
The majority of new standing faculty are at the rank of assistant professor. The School also recruited several senior scholars to its ranks.
- C. Brian Rose has joined the Department of Classical Studies as the James B. Pritchard Professor of Archaeology. A leading figure in Mediterranean archaeology whose principal work has been at Troy, Rose has also established a reputation as an art historian. As president-elect of the 8000-member Archaeological Institute of America, he has taken on an initiative to educate U.S. military troops preparing to leave for Iraq and Afghanistan about the cultural heritage of the Middle East and potential dangers to cultural property there in wartime.
- Alvaro Sandroni has joined the Department of Economics as a full professor. His research focuses on economic theory, with a special focus on learning in markets and games. His recent work has included testing of theoretical models in the context of elections, voting behavior and the insurance market.
- In the English department, David Kazanjian has been appointed associate professor. Kazanjian’s research focuses on transnational American literary and historical studies through the 19th century, as well as political philosophy, continental philosophy, colonial discourse studies and the Armenian diaspora.
