Guggenheim Recipient Wins Second Fellowship. April 2005. History and sociology professor Thomas J. Sugrue, who recently received a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation for a history of the struggle for civil rights in the American North in the 20th century, has been awarded a second fellowship for his work related to civil rights.

Penn Names First Phase of Life Sciences Complex for Trustee Carolyn Hoff Lynch. February 2005. The University of Pennsylvania has announced that the first phase of its new Life Sciences Complex will be named the Carolyn Hoff Lynch Biology Laboratory.
Karen Beckman Appointed to Jaffe Chair. February 1, 2005. Film and feminist theory scholar Dr. Karen Beckman has been appointed the inaugural Elliot and Roslyn Jaffe Assistant Professor of Film Studies in SAS.
Foundation Recognizes Amyx for Book on Japanese Finance.February 2005. Japan’s Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Foundation has given its 21st annual Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Award to Assistant Professor of Political Science Jennifer Amyx.
Charles Bernstein Named Regan Professor of English. February 2005. Charles Bernstein, a leading figure in contemporary poetry, has been appointed the Donald T. Regan Professor of English in SAS.
Partners Friends Indeed. February 2005. As the only postdoctoral research institution devoted to all of Jewish civilization's historical and cultural manifestations, the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies unites international scholars to explore a research theme from diverse viewpoints.
New Name for Bennett. February 2005. When Bennett Hall emerges from its renovation this fall, it will bear the name Fisher-Bennett Hall in recognition of a leadership gift from Richard L. Fisher, C’63, G’67.
Nathans’ Book on Jews in Tsarist Russia Wins Third Award. January 2005. The American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies has recognized Benjamin Nathans, associate professor of history, with the W. Bruce Lincoln Book Prize.
Beier and Kettl to Receive Named Chairs. January 2005. SAS Dean Rebecca W. Bushnell has announced that Dr. Eugene Beier has been named the Fay R. and Eugene L. Langberg Professor of Physics, and that Dr. Donald F. Kettl has been named the Stanley I. Sheerr Endowed Term Professor in the Social Sciences.
College Appoints Tighe as Dean of Freshmen. January 11, 2005. Janet Tighe, an adjunct assistant professor of history and sociology of science, has been named dean of freshmen and director of academic advising to the College of Arts and Sciences.
Committee to Float Proposal for New General Undergraduate Curriculum. December 2004. Four years after the pilot curriculum began offering students a new way to craft their Penn educations, the College of Arts and Sciences is moving into the next phase of curriculum reform.
Mathematics' Dennis DeTurck Named Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. December 15, 2004. Dennis DeTurck, the Evan C Thompson Professor for Excellence in Teaching, will succeed Rebecca Bushnell as Dean of the College on January 1, 2005.

Two in College Named Marshall Scholars. December 2004. Two students in the College of Arts and Sciences have been chosen as 2005 Marshall Scholars. Harveen Bal and Gabriel Mandujano were among 43 students nationwide to receive the award.
Two SAS Scholars Become Kahn Professors. December 2004. Dr. Jeremy Sabloff, professor of anthropology, has been named the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Endowed Term Professor in the Social Sciences, and Dr. Thomas Sugrue has been appointed the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Endowed Term Professor of History and Sociology.
Penn Museum Curator Named Honorary Fellow of Indian Archaeological Society. December 2004. Gregory L. Possehl received the decoration for his lifelong contribution to India archaeology, especially the study of the enigmatic Harappan Civilization.

Book by History Professor Thomas Childers Coming to a Television Set Near You. December 1, 2004. Professor Thomas Childers' book In the Shadows of War has been adapted for a two-hour docudrama, "Shot From the Sky," to air on the History Channel on Sunday, December 19.
Rebecca Bushnell Named Dean of Arts and Sciences. November 30, 2004. After a nationwide search, President Amy Gutmann and Interim Provost Peter Conn have announced the selection of Rebecca Bushnell, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a distinguished scholar of English literature, as the next dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.
Chemistry professor honored for contributions to science in Japan. November 2004. The Japanese government has awarded chemistry professor Amos Smith its Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.
Falleti Honored for Work in Latin American Studies. November 2004. Assistant professor of political science Tulia Falleti has received the Best Paper Prize of the Latin American Studies Association.
Edmund and Louise Kahn Endowed Term Professors. October 2004. Dean Samuel H. Preston has announced that three members of the SAS Faculty have been appointed Edmund J. and Louis W. Kahn Endowed Term Professors effective July 1.

Penn to Rename Bennett Hall in Honor of Former Trustee Richard L. Fisher. October 2004. University of Pennsylvania’s School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) will rename Bennett Hall, home of its world-renowned English Department, as Fisher-Bennett Hall in recognition of a leadership gift from alumnus Richard L. Fisher (C’63, G’67).
Penn Chemist Alan G. MacDiarmid Honored with China's Friendship Award. September 2004. Chemistry professor and Nobel laureate Alan G. MacDiarmid received the Friendship Award from Chinese Vice-Premier Hui Liangyu at a ceremony in Beijing in September.
Mutz’s Book Recognized as Best in Political Communications. September 2004. Professor Diana Mutz has received the American Political Science Association’s 2004 Doris Graber Outstanding Book Award for the best book on political communications in the last 10 years.
