Math Students Named NSF Fellows
Mathematics graduate students Oren Ben-Bassat and Sarah Mason have been awarded postdoctoral research fellowships by the National Science Foundation. Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships support future leaders in the mathematical sciences by enabling them to participate in research environments that will have maximal impact on their development. Ben-Bassat will be conducting research at Columbia University, and Mason, who received a Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in 2005, will be doing research at UC Berkeley. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that promotes the progress of science. With an annual budget of about $5.5 billion, the NSF is the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported research conducted by American universities.
"Congratulations to Oren, Sarah and the mathematics faculty for doing so well against nationwide competition," said Professor Jack Nagel, associate dean for graduate studies. The NSF awards 30 postdoctoral fellowships annually. "This good news is further evidence of the excellence of our mathematics program."
