Alumnus Creates Fellowships to Honor Judith Rodin
September 2004
Dr. Raymond K.F. Ch’ien, GR’78, PAR’02,
established the Judith Rodin Fellowships in 2004 to honor
outgoing University President Dr.
Judith Rodin ,
who in 1994 became the first female appointed to the presidency
of an Ivy League institution. In creating these fellowships,
Dr. Ch’ien said he wanted “generations of Penn
graduate students to appreciate Dr. Rodin’s legacy
of service, scholarship, and commitment to learning.”
These fellowships support the scholarly activities of distinguished
doctoral students in the social sciences. Recipients come
from developing countries and must have a demonstrated commitment
to nation-building. Earlier this year, four students were
appointed as the inaugural Judith Rodin Fellows.
Dr. Ch’ien, who completed his Ph.D. in economics at Penn, is the executive chairman of Chinadotcom Corporation. He is also chairman of the MTR Corporation Ltd. In addition to his past service as a member of the Executive Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, Dr. Ch’ien is chairman of the Advisory Committee on Corruption of the Independent Commission Against Corruption and of the Hong Kong/Japan Business Co-operation Committee.
