Political Science Professor Recognized for Article’s Lasting Impact

The American Political Science Association has selected Professor Rogers Smith to receive its annual award for a book or article that has made a lasting impression on the field of law and courts.
He will receive the Wadsworth Publishing Award for his 1988 article, “Political Jurisprudence, the ‘New Institutionalism,’ and the Future of Public Law,” in September at the association’s annual meeting in Chicago. The association is the leading professional organization for the study of political science and serves more than 15,000 members in over 80 countries.
Professor Smith, who is chairman of the political science department, came to Penn in 2001 from Yale University as the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science. He is a scholar of constitutional law, American political thought, and modern legal and political theory with special interest in questions of citizenship, race, ethnicity, and gender. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has been honored by Harvard University, the Organization of American Historians, the Social Science History Association, the Association of American Publishers, the New England Political Science Association, and Yale University. He received his B.A. from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University.
