Penn's Fels Institute Launches Washington Internship Program

February 2006

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of Career Services have collaborated with the Fels Institute of Government to launch a new Washington Internship Program. Based at the Fels Institute of Government, the program will help students select and apply for summer internships in Washington, D.C., in both government and the private sector.

“This program brings together the ongoing efforts across campus that support students who want to learn more about how Washington works,” College Dean Dennis DeTurck said. “By working closely with the Washington Semester Program, Career Services’ Penn in Washington program, and alumni clubs in D.C., the Washington Internship Program can offer a seamless, integrated experience that provides students with a deep understanding of the daily functioning of our nation’s capital. The program will build strong relationships between Penn and the key players in Washington. That will only multiply the opportunities for students and enhance Penn’s presence in Washington.”.

“We’re creating a wrap-around program that prepares students for their Washington experience, ensures that the internships are successful, and connects that experience to their academic work here at Penn,” said Don Kettl, director of the Fels Institute of Government. “Upon their return, students can weave theory and practice together in a new course offering in the fall that is tailored to take advantage of all that students will learn over the summer.”

A wide range of internship opportunities will be available to College students over the summer in Washington, including Congressional offices, advocacy organizations, museums, media outlets, and programs in the arts. Details are available on the program’s website, at http://www.fels.upenn.edu/introduction.htm. The deadline for applications for summer 2006 is February 15.
