Wyeth Research Establishes Award to Honor Chemistry Professor

Global healthcare company Wyeth Research recently made a generous gift to the School of Arts and Sciences to establish of the Madeleine Joullié Undergraduate Research Award in the Department of Chemistry. This announcement was made at this year’s Penn-Wyeth lecture, held on May 6. The prize will be awarded annually to an outstanding student pursuing research in the chemical sciences, as selected by the undergraduate committee of the department.
This award is named in honor of Professor of Chemistry Madeleine M. Joullié, G’50, Gr’53, who made history at Penn as the first full-time female graduate student in chemistry. A longtime faculty member and scholar of organic chemistry, Professor Joullié is widely known for her work in the areas of heterocyclic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and the synthesis of natural products. In addition to being named one of the “76 Smartest People in Philadelphia” by Philadelphia Magazine, she has been honored with the American Cyanamid Faculty Award, the American Institute of Chemists Scroll Award, and the American Chemical Society A.C. Cope Senior Scholar Award, among others. Professor Joullié is the author of three books and over 180 articles.
Wyeth Research is a worldwide leader in pharmaceuticals, consumer health products, and animal care supplies. The company has a history of corporate philanthropy and has supported a number of initiatives at the University.
