Thesis Formatting Requirements

Basic typographical requirements

Margins: Top & Bottom = 1 inch. Left = 1.5 inch. Right = 1 inch.
Double spaced
Times or Times New Roman font in 12 point size for the main text. (Modulate type size appropriately for elements other than main body, such as headings and footnotes.)
Use the same font throughout including title page, table of contents, main text, headings, notes, tables, and (to extent possible) graphics.

Required Elements (in following order)

Title page, which should look like this.
(You may include a dedication or brief acknowledgement on a separate page if you like.)
Abstract (a single page summary of the question, method and key findings of your thesis.)
Table of contents with section and subsection level headings and page numbers. Page numbers must start with the first page of the main text as "page 1."
Map(s) of the part(s) of the world that you will be discussing in your thesis, as appropriate.
Main text (obviously).
Appendices (as necessary and appropriate).
Endnotes (if not using footnotes or parenthetical references).
Full and complete bibliography.
Page numbers should follow proper conventions:
- Title page should not have a page number on it, though it should count as the first page
- The prematter (Abstract, Dedications, TOC, etc.) should be number with lower case roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv, etc.)
- The main body should be numbered with regular numbers starting with 1.

Citations

You may use the citation format of your choice (full notes vs. parenthetical references), and when using full notes, either footnotes or endnotes. The only requirement is that the citation format conform to one of the major recognized styles (Harvard, Chicago, MLA, etc.), and that it is applied consistently throughout the thesis.

Copies to submit

You should submit one (1) unbound hard copy (secured with alligator clips) and one (1) electronic copy. The electronic copy should be in either Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) format (this is preferred) or MS Word (.doc or .docx) format. Please submit it as a single file—i.e., no separate files for the title page and body. (You should be able to figure out how to get your word processor to number the pages correctly in a single file.)
