Reintegrative Shaming Experiments

The Reintegrative Shaming Experiments (RISE) project has been running in the Australian Capital Territory since 1995. It examines conferencing in Canberra, which is based on the "Wagga model" of police-run conferences. RISE has produced a rich collection of data which explore the effectiveness of restorative justice conferencing by comparing the reoffending patterns of offenders and the satisfaction experienced by victims who were randomly assigned to be diverted from court, with those who experienced the formal court system in the usual way. Lawrence Sherman is the principal investigator for RISE. The study is being conducted by the Centre for Restorative Justice at the Australian National University, and managed by Dr Heather Strang, who is also Director of the Centre.
