A new Home Office
research project is helping Crown Prosecutors learn whether there
is a better way to bring some cases to justice. Duty Prosecutors will
play a key role in this project, under new DPP guidance prepared expressly
for that purpose. This guidance is available online at www.crim.upenn.edu/rj/dpp
. This newsletter supplements that guidance with descriptions of cases
that Duty Prosecutors in the pilot boroughs have either concurred
in, or advised against, a decision by the Metropolitan Police to divert
a case from prosecution to restorative justice. These summaries are
prepared by criminologists from the University of Pennsylvania and
the Australian National University, based on reviews of the case files,
consultations with the OIC, and discussions with the DP. Any questions
about the decisions reported in this newsletter should be directed
to Elizabeth.joslin@cps.gsi.gov.uk
