There are many ways to study Korean Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to our undergraduate program, graduate program, and visiting affiliate programs, we have the following special programs.

Penn-Seoul National University Korean Studies Doctoral Student Exchange Program

For academic year 2017-18, the James Joo-Jin Kim Program in Korean Studies will select one (1) School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) doctoral student for participation in the Penn-Seoul National University Korean studies Ph.D. student exchange. A nominee must be a doctoral student in a humanities or social science field who has completed coursework and is working on a dissertation focused on Korea. Hosted by SNU Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies during the period of affiliation (September 1, 2017-August 31, 2018), the student will pay Penn any tuition or fees that (s)he may owe. The exchange student will be chosen on the basis of the competitively established merit of the proposals in light of resources offered by the partner university. A completed application form and a letter from the academic adviser must be e-mailed to the Kim Program (kim-pks@sas.upenn.edu) by 5 pm, Friday, February 3, 2017. Nominating chairs and nominees will be notified of the decision by mid-February.

Penn-in-Seoul Program (will not be offered in Summer 2017)

The Penn-in-Seoul program provides Penn undergraduates the opportunity to spend their summer in Seoul, South Korea, one of the most tech savvy and dynamic cities in the world. While in the program, students will enroll in East Asia: Past & Present (History 005) and at least 1 course at Seoul National University and may participate in a 4 week internships at a multinational corporation, a research center or think tank, or a government agency. Although we will make every attempt to match students with an internship provider, placement is not guaranteed.  No previous knowledge of Korean is required to participate in the Penn-in-Seoul program, however, being fluent in Korean may be beneficial in the internship placement process.
