Description:
LALS is hosting a one-year working group that will convene in 9 sessions to be held between September 2006 and April 2007 that will be devoted to the study the ways in which certain key concepts have been used and transformed by U.S. and Latin American scholars specializing in Latin American, Caribbean, American and Latino studies. The 8 keywords we propose to discuss are: colonial, creole, modernity, indigeneity, American(ism), (neo)liberalism, gender/sexuality, and transculturation/miscegenation. Some of the questions we will explore in these monthly workshops are the following:
What are the key concepts used in Latin American studies by scholars teaching and conducting research in the United States and Latin America? How can we acknowledge the multiple meanings of a supposedly common lexicon used within Latin America itself to refer to specific cultural and historical experiences? How can we produce critical scholarship that acknowledges the points of contact and the differences between the ways we use terms such as colonial, creole, modernity, American(ism), liberalism, transculturation, miscegenation and gender/sexuality within Latin America and in the United States? Can we produce knowledge that is relevant for students of Latin American cultures in American and Latin American universities?
Each session will include a list of suggested readings to be distributed before each meeting by accessing the online reserve for this Workshop, located at:
