LALS Graduate Student Field Research Grants

Each year LALS makes a series of small grants available for graduate students whose research requires they travel to Latin America during the summer months. The call for applications is usually published in early spring and is announced on the graduate student listserv and on the website, with applications due at the beginning of April. In 2014, LALS granted funding to six graduate students to help cover costs of airfare and other expenses. Grantees report back to the University on their activities each year at the spring Forum on Graduate Student Field Research.

Graduate Research Travel Awards
Application Deadline:  Monday, March 28, 2016

Graduate Student Field Research Grants for the summer of 2016. The grants are primarily intended to provide graduate and professional school students with the opportunity to deepen their disciplinary interests in any country of Latin America and the Caribbean. The awards support short periods (two weeks or more) of field research.Grants will be limited to travel expenses.  Application is open to all graduate students without citizenship or visa requirements. The amount of individual awards will varies but rarely exceed $1,500. Grantees may be asked to share their experiences and findings by participating in colloquia or panel discussions during the year following their return from the field.

Nancy Farris Graduate Student Paper Award
Submissions due Friday, March 25, 2016

This award is given annually to the best paper in Latin American and Latino Studies written by a current graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. The prize honors the scholarly leadership of Dr. Nancy M. Farriss, who founded the Latin American Cultures Program at Penn in 1986. The submission must be a single-authored paper written while the student is still in a PhD program at Penn.
