People, Markets, and Behavior

Penn's rich resources in the Social Sciences provide our students with the research and analytical tools necessary to interpret, explain, evaluate, and predict human behavior in contemporary societies.

If you’re interested in understanding how people relate to society, Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (ANTH 002 601) will familiarize you with the study of culture and human institutions and how they change. Folklore and the Supernatural (FOLK 406 601) takes an in-depth look at one particular aspect of culture—traditional beliefs about supernatural beings and supernatural realms. In the Philosophy department, Ethics (PHIL 002 061) examines how we morally evaluate our actions, large and small.

With the economy still occupying center stage, a quar-tet of courses can help you understand how it works. Introduction to Microeconomics (ECON 001 601) focuses on supply and demand, income distribution, and more, while Introduction to Macroeconomics (ECON 002 601) looks at economic analysis and its application. International Economics (ECON 050 601) introduces the theory of international trade and international monetary economics. And Intermediate Macroeconomics (ECON 102 601) examines facts and theories about the deter-mination of per capita income and its differences across countries and across time.
