Global Issues and Policy

Penn offers rich resources for students who want to develop global perspectives on issues that affect our world today, ranging from the political and economic to the artistic and cultural. You’ll become familiar with diverse cultures and learn the history—and the future—of hu-man interaction across the world.

International Relations in Theory and Practice (PSCI 150 601) surveys the emergence of the Cold War, the break-down of the Soviet Union, the rise of the European Union, the spread of nuclear weapons, the economic development of Third World states, the impact of inter-national trade, the violation of human rights, and the degradation of the global environmental. Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict in Film (RUSS 430 601) studies the cinematic representation of civil wars, ethnic conflicts, nationalis-tic doctrines, and genocidal policies, focusing on violence in Russia and the Balkans after the collapse of the Soviet Bloc. Civil liberties and the court system are the focus in Law and Society (SOCI 135 601), centering on societal issues involving the law domestically and internationally.

Asia is the focus in two courses. Introduction to the Religions of Asia (RELS 001 601) introduces the major religions of South and East Asia and explores their myths, rituals, art, poetry, and philosophy. Women and Health in South Asia (SAST 286 601) examines gender as a crucial element in women’s survival, especially in terms of the burden of disease, nutritional status, and access to health services.

In a truly global class, World Music and Culture (MUSC 050 601) tells a series of stories about particular record-ings made with, or using the music of, peoples culturally and geographically distant from the U.S.
