Femida Handy, PhD

Professor, School of Social Policy and Practice; Director, PhD in Social Welfare program; Affiliated Faculty, Organizational Dynamics

Dr. Femida Handy’s research and teaching focus on the economics of the nonprofit sector, volunteering, philanthropy, nonprofit entrepreneurship, environmental issues, and micro-finance. She is the author of many articles on all aspects of the nonprofit sector including international comparative scholarship in these areas. She has co-authored several books and her most co-edited and award-winning book is The Palgrave Handbook on Global Philanthropy. Dr. Handy has also written about environmental issues, including a children’s book on the ecological footprint. Dr. Handy has published award-winning articles in scientific journals addressing a variety of nonprofit-related topics, and she has served as the Editor-in-Chief of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, the premier journal in the field.

Dr. Handy earned an MA, MES, and PhD from York University in Toronto, Canada.
