Abstract:

We propose to write a scientific popular book called “Mental diet: How to balance your mental nutrients to flourish”. Analogous to food diet that balances the food nutrients to make us healthier, Mental Diet balances the mental nutrients like pleasure, engagement, gratitude, love, fear, etc. to make us happier. This analogy is derived from the fact that many physical health problems like obesity and Type 2 diabetes, as well as psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and stress are both endemics that are largely due to a conflict between our genes and our well-being. This book will elucidate reasons for why and how our genes may not always serve our interests, as well as describe the consequences of this relational conflict for various food and mental nutrients. Finally, we will offer suggestions on how to develop a mental diet plan that is aimed at improving readers’ mental health. Since people are already familiar with the idea of food diet, this book can help the dissemination of positive psychology. It also provides a new perspective that explores the root cause of what it is that precludes people from flourishing in developed countries; this perspective is supported through the tenets of evolutionary psychology and the science of positive psychology.
