  • ENVS 630 Global Energy Systems and Policy
This is a survey course addressing the wide range of energy systems employed throughout the world; the principal impacts associated with such systems; and the role that energy plays in sustainable development. The course will utilize a sustainable development framework, following the efforts of such organizations as the UN Commission on Sustainable Development, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and others in addressing global energy systems and policy. The course will address such topics as the on-going role of conventional energy systems; renewable and advanced technology energy supply technologies; energy resources and peak oil concerns; energy security; efficiency considerations; environmental and health concerns; rural energy and the Millennium Development Goals; and energy indicators for addressing sustainable development policies. It will use the Peoples Republic of China as a case study, exploring how these individual topics are being addressed within that country; examining the nature of the energy transformation now occurring there; and exploring potential Chinese options for sustainable development.
