Submatriculation

Submatriculation for Penn undergraduate students

If you are a current undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, you may begin the Master of Science in Applied Geosciences (MSAG) program while completing your undergraduate program via the submatriculation application procedure. In most cases, submatriculation will allow you to finish both the undergraduate and graduate program in five years. Students may enter the program as submatriculates between their first semester junior year and first semester senior year.

Submatriculation admission requirements

  • You may apply as early as second semester sophomore year and as late as second semester junior year. Students about to enter their last semester of their undergraduate career at Penn are not eligible for submatriculation but may apply for regular admission to the Master of Science in Applied Geosciences.
  • Applicants must have a minimum 3.2 GPA, but higher GPAs are preferred.
  • Students should be Earth Science, Geology, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering majors to be considered for the program.  Students in other majors should discuss their options with the Master of Science in Applied Geosciences academic advisor.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to have taken GEOL 100: Intro to Geology as well as at least two 200-level Geology classes before submatriculation.
  • If you are interested in submatriculating, you should meet with both your undergraduate academic advisor and the Master of Science in Applied Geosciences Director as early as possible. They will help you determine whether this program is a good fit for you, confirm your eligibility and determine whether additional forms should be completed.
  • Your submatriculation application must be submitted to the student's school office and the Master of Science in Applied Geosciences Program Director prior to your enrollment in the program.

Double-counting courses

Master of Science in Applied Geosciences submatriculates may have four courses double-counted toward both the undergraduate and graduate programs. All double-counted courses must be approved by both your undergraduate and graduate academic advisors.

  • Double-counted courses must be graduate level (typically numbered 400 or above).
  • Appropriate courses taken prior to submatriculation may be double-counted.
