LPS Names Political Science Department’s John Lapinski as 2013 Graduation Speaker

John Lapinski, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He also serves as the Director of the Elections Unit at NBC News, which projects races for NBC and analyzes and produces election related stories through exit polls for NBC News, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo, and all of NBC’s digital properties. He has worked as a consultant at NBC News for over ten years. Dr. Lapinski earned his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 2000, and previously was an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Yale University. He came to Penn in 2006.
His primary area of research is concerned with understanding national elections as well as lawmaking in Congress through empirical analysis. His most recent book, The Substance of Representation: Congress, American Political Development, and Lawmaking, is forthcoming in summer 2013 from Princeton University Press. He is currently writing Southern Nation (also contracted with Princeton University Press), which assesses the pivotal role of the South in crafting laws for the United States. His research has also appeared in the American Journal of Political Science, Perspectives on Politics, The Journal of Politics, and the British Journal of Politics & International Relations.
His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation where he was a Resident Fellow for the 2004-05 academic year, the Dirksen Congressional Center, the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale University, and the Christopher H. Browne Center for International Politics and at the University of Pennsylvania.
