Destination Philly

The University of Pennsylvania is located in Philadelphia, a city that has a population of 1.8 million, making it the fifth largest city in the US. The city’s historic, artistic, and commercial centers are located a short distance from the University of Pennsylvania.  Philadelphia is a city of many neighborhoods, and this makes it seem like a small town.

Philadelphia has the second largest student concentration on the East Coast and the lowest cost of living. There are 300,000 students and 80 colleges and universities in Philadelphia. The city offers everything from rich history to diverse dining; the arts and culture to recreation and outdoor activities. Philadelphia has something for everyone.

Philadelphia was the nation’s capital from 1790–1800 and it is where the Declaration of Independence was signed and where the Constitution of the United States was written.  It is one of the most historic cities in the US. 

Things to do in Philadelphia:

  • Walk through Philadelphia’s many ethnic neighborhoods such as Chinatown and the Italian Market
  • Visit the many historic sights, including two famous symbols of freedom: the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was
  • Shop at two of the largest malls in the US- in Pennsylvania, there’s no tax on clothing
  • Dine at restaurants that feature local, regional, and international cuisines
  • Enjoy performances of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pennsylvania Ballet, Opera Company of Philadelphia, or local productions of major Broadway plays
  • 1,700 exotic animals at the Philadelphia Zoo, the oldest in the US
  • Explore 50 museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Rodin Museum
  • Join thousands of sports fans at professional baseball, basketball or football games
  • Spend an evening at one of the many jazz clubs, coffee houses, or dance clubs
