Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificates
The Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificates recognize the academic accomplishment of students who complete the Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Program at Penn. While it is not a diploma or degree, the certificate acknowledges the rigor of the classical curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania and the academic excellence that our students achieve in order to earn a certificate. Certificates will be awarded at the end of each academic year to students who have satisfied all the requirements.
The Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Program at the University of Pennsylvania offers four options for a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Pre-Classical to provide incentive for academic excellence for the highly motivated, dedicated student.

- Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Latin
- Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Classical Languages
- Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Advanced Classical Studies
I. Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Greek
The Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Greek recognizes students who have attained a high degree of proficiency in Greek, but who have a lesser proficiency in Latin. The certificate will be awarded to students who have completed a minimum of 4 CUs of coursework during an academic year. This coursework must include 2 CUs of Latin at any level and 2 CUs of Greek at the Post-Baccalaureate Seminar (CLST 402) level or above.
Course Requirements:
Fall Term
- CLST 402: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek or any Greek course at the 500 level or above
- LATN 101: Elementary Latin I or LATN 203: Intermediate Latin Prose
Spring Term
- CLST 402: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek or any Greek course at the 500 level or above
- LATN 102: Elementary Latin II or LATN 204: Intermediate Latin Poetry
Students must receive a grade of B or better in each course and achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
II. Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Latin
The Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Latin recognizes students who have attained a high degree of proficiency in Latin, but who have a lesser proficiency in Greek. The certificate will be awarded to students who have completed a minimum of 4 CUs of coursework during an academic year. This coursework must include 2 CUs of Greek at any level and 2 CUs of Latin at the Post-Baccalaureate Seminar (CLST 403) level or above.
Course Requirements:
Fall Term
- CLST 403: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin or any Latin course at the 500 level or above
- GREK 101: Elementary Classical Greek I or GREK 203: Intermediate Greek Prose
Spring Term
- CLST 403: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin or any Latin course at the 500 level or above
- GREK 102: Elementary Classical Greek II or GREK 204: Intermediate Greek Poetry
Students must receive a grade of B or better in each course and achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
III. Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Classical Languages
The Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Classical Languages recognizes students who have attained a high degree of proficiency in both Greek and Latin. The certificate will be awarded to students who have completed a minimum of 4 CUs of coursework during an academic year. This coursework must include a minimum of 2 CUs of Latin at the Post-Baccalaureate Seminar (CLST 403) level or above and a minimum 2 CUs of Greek coursework at the Post-Baccalaureate Seminar (CLST 402) level or above.

- CLST 403: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin or any Latin course at the 500 level or above
- CLST 402: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek or any Greek course at the 500 level or above
Spring Term
- CLST 403: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin or any Latin course at the 500 level or above
- CLST 402: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek or any Greek course at the 500 level or above
Students must receive a grade of B or better in each course and achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
IV. Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Advanced Classical Studies
The Post-Baccalaureate Classical Studies Certificate in Advanced Classical Studies recognizes students who have attained at least intermediate proficiency in both Greek and Latin, and who have extended their studies to include graduate-level courses above and beyond their language courses.
The certificate will be awarded to students who have completed a minimum of 6 CUs of coursework during an academic year. This coursework must include 2 CUs of graduate-level work (500-level or above) in Classical Studies or a related field (ancient history, archaeology, ancient philosophy, comparative literature, linguistics, religious studies, Byzantine studies, Greek or Roman art history), as well as a minimum of 2 CUs in Latin coursework at the intermediate (200) level or above and 2 CUs in Greek coursework at the intermediate (200) level or above.
Course Requirements:
Fall Term
- LATN 203: Intermediate Latin Prose; CLST 403: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin; or any Latin course at the 500 level or above
- GREK 203: Intermediate Greek Prose; CLST 402: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek; or any Greek course at the 500 level or above
- 500-level or above in related coursework
Spring Term
- LATN 204: Intermediate Latin Poetry; CLST 403: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Latin; or any Latin course at the 500 level or above
- GREK 204: Intermediate Greek Poetry; CLST 402: Post-Baccalaureate Seminar in Greek; or any Greek course at the 500 level or above
- 500-level or above in related coursework
Students must receive a grade of B or better in each course and achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
