Korean Summer Language Institute
The University of Pennsylvania in partnership with Kyung Hee University, a private Korean university, offers an eight-week Korean Summer Language Institute in Seoul. The program is equivalent to one year of college-level coursework in Korean.
The program is part of the National Security Language Initiative, a U.S. government interagency effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critically needed foreign languages. The United States Department of State and CAORC (Council of American Overseas Research Centers) have made available full scholarships for intensive overseas study in the Korean language. All program costs will be covered by these scholarships, including travel to and from the student’s home city and Korea, pre-departure orientation costs, visa fees, room, board, travel within Korea, and entrance fees for program activities.
Curriculum
Three levels of instruction in the Korean language are offered:
- Beginning: no prior training or knowledge
- Intermediate: completion of one year of college-level Korean or its equivalent prior to the start of the program
- Advanced: completion of two years of college-level Korean or its equivalent prior to the start of the program
Students will be required to attend all program activities, including classroom instruction and cultural excursions. Classes will be held on the Kyung Hee University campus.
