Alumni Testimonials

What do our alumni say about their experience as undergraduates at LPS? They say it changed their lives, deepened their understanding of the world, and opened unexpected opportunities for them.

Sarah Wanenchak

“As a non-traditional student coming from Community College of Philadelphia, I really appreciated the many opportunities that LPS offered me. I was able to take classes with faculty, instructors, and classmates who represented a rich spectrum, from top scholars and researchers to passionate and enthusiastic students. The close engagement of LPS with the other colleges in the university meant that I was able to take full advantage of the various strong departments that call Penn their academic home, and the attentive and approachable staff helped to make sure that I was always on track. My work in LPS has carried me into a PhD program in one of the best sociology departments in the country, and I'll continue to build on that solid foundation wherever life takes me. ”

George Matysik

“My LPS experience was truly life-changing. I joined LPS while working as a janitor for the University. Today, I apply what I learned from my Urban Studies degree in my career as Director of Policy and Planning for Philabundance, the food bank for the Delaware Valley. While I always wanted to effect positive change in my community, it was LPS that gave me the toolset to make it a reality.”

Dan Baker

“Penn's ‘one university’ policy offers students an extraordinary array of courses from every corner of the campus. During my time here, I have had the pleasure of learning from top professors in the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Science, and The Wharton School. The toughest challenge was having to choose from all the great classes available! LPS helped me achieve my goal of getting accepted to the Wharton School's full-time MBA program class of 2012.”

Major in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics

“I am very grateful for the opportunity that the University of Pennsylvania has afforded me. I was accepted by the University in the fall of 1999 as a forty-nine-year-old homemaker. Since that September, I have travelled paths I never dreamed of—deep into the bowels of the magma chamber in Geology; on a trek across Africa with the apes in Evolution; in the hospital halls of bipolar disorder in Psych 101; and across the miles to wonder at the aged European architecture in Architecture 101. I have become fluent in French and my lifelong love of languages has been strengthened by new classes in Italian and Latin. My thirst for learning is still keen even as my diploma is being prepared. I have had some of the very best teachers, some of whom are friends. Now I hope to tutor in French, and with a Penn degree I have the sense of security I need and have worked so hard for.”

Jennifer Paige Chambers

“The University of Pennsylvania's Political Science Department is top-notch. As an LPS student, I was able to take part in the Penn in Washington semester and work on Capitol Hill for a United States Senator. The opportunities are fantastic!”
