Penn Ph.D.s in music are a distinguished group, presently teaching at universities and colleges that include Yale, Michigan, Haverford, Chicago, University of Texas, Pomona, and Northwestern. Penn first began offering the Ph.D. in music in the 1940s. As Penn conciously evolved toward the model of the modern research university in the 1950s through ambitious and strategic investments in facilities and faculty, so the music department's focus on graduate studies matured during the 1960s and 70s. Our placement record in recent years has been outstanding, even in the face of the difficult academic job market. Penn graduates include recipients of NEH and NEA fellowships, Guggenheim fellowships, and a Pulitzer Prize.
