Penn Ph.D.s in Composition

Email addresses are included here by permission. Please send additions and corrections to mmsmith@sas.upenn.edu

The following list includes only recipients of the Ph.D. in composition, with information on their academic positions. There are many distinguished and active composers who received a terminal Master's degree from Penn during the 1970s and early 80s (when the University did not grant Ph.D.s in composition.) Among these are Robert Carl (Hartt School of Music), Martin Herman (UC, Long Beach), Stephen Jaffe (Duke), and Robert Kyr (University of Oregon). There are also a number of our composition graduates who do not hold academic positions but maintain active compositional careers (among these is recent Pulitzer Prize winner, Melinda Wagner).
