Auditions for Music Department Ensembles

The following is the audition information for the 2011-2012 academic year. Please read and follow the instructions carefully for audition sign-up procedures.

We will begin taking requests for auditions for the 2012-2013 year on

MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 2012.

In order to sign up for a time, please email Veronica Jurkiewicz, Performance Coordinator at vmj@sas.upenn.edu with the following information:

• Your name
• Contact information (phone number, email)
• Year of graduation
• Your instrument/voice part
• The ensemble(s) you wish to join
• Are you currently taking lessons and/or plan to take lessons on your instrument (if so, with whom?)
• A preferred date and a range of times that you would be available (see schedule below)

Please fill out and bring the AUDITION INFORMATION FORM with you to your audition.

You will receive a confirmation of your date and time, along with further instructions (location, requirements, etc.) as soon as possible. Below is the audition schedule:

Penn Symphony Orchestra
Penn Wind Ensemble

*On Wednesday, September 7, auditions scheduled between 10am and 3pm will be reserved for students who wish to audition for both the large instrumental ensembles (Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, etc.) AND smaller ensembles (Chamber, Baroque, etc.). This will enable students to audition for several groups in one session.

Penn Baroque and Recorder Ensembles

*This time is reserved for students who are interested in auditioning for the Orchestra and/or Wind Ensemble AND either the Baroque/Recorder Ensembles or Penn Chamber. This will enable you to audition for any of these groups in one session.

Jazz Combos
By appointment, Tuesday, Sept. 6 and Wednesday, Sept. 7 2011. Contact Wade Dean to set up an audition. Audition requirements are listed below.

Music 10

Auditions for Music 10 will be held on Tuesday, September 20 and Thursday, September 22 from 10:00am - 12:00pm on each day. Students who are declared music majors or minors (or those who have not yet declared but have demonstrated "intent" to declare by enrolling in Music Department courses) may sign up on the door of Dr. Ketner's office, room 227 Music Building.

Requirements for Auditions

Choral Ensembles: There is nothing to prepare for these auditions. You will be asked to sing a series of vocal exercises at your audition. Some sight-reading skill is required for both smaller ensembles - Ancient Voices and the University Choir.

Instrumental Ensembles: In general, you should prepare 3-5 minutes of music of your choosing. Please prepare selections from works that demonstrate contrasting styles.

Penn Symphony Orchestra/Wind Ensemble: Auditions will last approximately 5 minutes and will consist of prepared music + a short sight-reading excerpt. You should prepare music that demonstrates both technical and lyrical playing. You will be asked to sight-read a short excerpt at the audition. *There are no orchestral excerpts to prepare*.
